With polio 99 percent eradicated worldwide, global health advocates say an end to the disease is in sight, and they are asking for help with the other 1 percent on World Polio Day.

World Polio Day, celebrated Wednesday, both marks progress and offers a call to action to fight the disease, which can affect nerves and eventually lead to paralysis. This year marks a major milestone, with India completing its second polio-free year. “India continues to be zero-polio. This is an unprecedented progress,” Ajay Khera, deputy commissioner in the health and family welfare ministry, told IANS.

In February, the World Health Organization removed India from the list of polio-endemic countries, but India has two more years until it can be declared fully polio-free.

This is a prestigious project of the Rotary Club of Trivandrum. The Rotary Club of Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA has helped us to implement this project by providing finance to meet the cost during the initial two years. This help stops with effect from July 2014. We thank Rtn JodyTull and Rtn Ashish Sarkar for their help and encouragement.

We had adopted eight severely handicapped children for this project. We gave them 8 Acer laptops costing Rs.3,20,000. They have been trained in the use of internet. We also offer them training in yoga and meditation. Mr. Abhiraman is the trainer. He is a dedicated young man.

The instructor is MrsVijayalakshmi a member of the Inner Wheel Club.
